Commissioner Jim Paschal raised a key issue by asking, “How much would it cost?” Mayor Andrews did not provide a specific figure but noted that building pickleball courts can cost between $10,000 and $50,000, depending on features like lighting and fencing.
Commissioner April Collins responded, “Costs would be a determining factor for me.” Mayor Pro Tem Tommy Beale added, “From what I have heard here tonight, no one on the board is against it. But I think all of us are curious about what the costs would be.”
Commissioner Lynne Green agreed with the idea but warned about the town’s other financial priorities. “We have several other things that are facing the town now, and all of them are very costly,” she said.
Mayor Andrews said he plans to speak with officials in nearby Sanford and Lee County for advice. He also noted that a grant from the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund might be available next spring to help with funding.
