Why Pickleball is Captivating Long Beach Students and Transforming Campus Life?

Pickleball’s Popularity in Long Beach: Pickleball is growing in popularity across the U.S., and students at Long Beach State are embracing the sport for its ease of play, social benefits, and mental health support. Despite low visibility among Gen Z, the sport is finding new fans through clubs and community-based activities.

The sport combines parts of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton. It requires little equipment and is low-impact, making it easy for anyone to start playing. But compared to basketball or E-sports, pickleball doesn’t get as much media attention or celebrity endorsements, which makes it less known among younger people.

Appealing to a New Generation

Though Generation Z grew up with social media and gaming, pickleball offers something different: real-life connection, movement, and fun. It’s fast-paced but simple, and it provides a mental break from screen time and daily stress.

Building a Campus Community

At Long Beach State, the Pickleball Club offers students a place to learn and connect. The club charges a $30 annual fee, and equipment is provided in the Kinesiology West Gym. Rachel Wallace, the club’s president, created the group to build a sense of belonging.

“I was bummed that we didn’t have a pickleball club and the first year, I thought this needs to be done.” – (Wallace)

Parker Schall, a first-year graduate student, said the club is welcoming to newcomers.

“The thing about the club is that everyone there a relatively new themselves, so we’re all still learning together. We’ll have random people kind of stumble in, never even heard of pickleball and start playing and absolutely love it.” – (Schall)

What Comes Next for Pickleball

The sport’s future looks bright, especially with support from schools and student-led clubs. As more young people try it and share their experiences, pickleball could rise in popularity alongside more mainstream sports. Its low cost, simple rules, and mental health benefits make it a good fit for Gen Z.
