The second annual Dink4Choice pickleball fundraiser will take place on May 3-4, continuing its mission to support women’s reproductive rights. The event, held in Chapel Hill, raises funds for the local Planned Parenthood South Atlantic affiliate. Last year’s tournament raised over $15,000.
A Family Tradition of Advocacy
The Goettman-Christopher women are passionate advocates for women’s reproductive rights. Carol Goettman, 90, began volunteering with Planned Parenthood in the 1960s and has worked on reproductive rights ever since.
Her daughter, Elizabeth Goettman Christopher, and granddaughter, Caroline, now a nurse at Chapel Hill’s Planned Parenthood Health Center, are continuing the family tradition.
Growing the Tournament
Elizabeth, who moved to Chapel Hill from Chicago in 2022, introduced the idea of hosting a pickleball tournament for Planned Parenthood. “I was thrilled by the community support last year, even though I was new to town,” she said. With the help of local pickleball ambassador Jen Johnson, Elizabeth’s idea became reality. Last year’s tournament exceeded expectations, with 128 players participating.
Family Involvement
Caroline, 25, played in last year’s tournament, winning the advanced women’s bracket. This year, she’ll team up with her sister, Lily. The younger generation is also helping by selling baked goods and lemonade during the event. “They bring so much to the cause,” said Carol, proud of her daughters and granddaughters.
The Cause’s Importance
Carol, who remains deeply involved in advocacy work despite her age, believes that younger generations are more passionate than ever about causes like reproductive rights. “I’m so glad to see that,” she said. The event has become a meaningful way to support Planned Parenthood while raising awareness about important issues.
