Duluth’s 70-Year-Old Pickleball Phenom Eyes Gold at US Open Pickleball Tournament

Duluth’s Pickleball Champion Returns: Lou Campbell, a 70-year-old from Duluth, Minnesota, is heading to Florida this weekend to compete in the 70-plus men’s division at the US Open Pickleball Tournament for the second year in a row.

A Hockey Player Turned Pickleball Medalist

After spending much of his life playing hockey, Lou Campbell began playing pickleball just three years ago. Despite being new to the sport, he’s already found success. Last year, he earned a silver medal in the singles division at the US Open Pickleball Tournament.

Now, he’s back and ready to compete again at one of the sport’s biggest events, which draws more than 3,000 players each year. Athletes from across the country come to play in singles and doubles across various age brackets.

Pickleball Passion That Defies Age

For Lou Campbell, age is just a number. He shared his love for the game and its welcoming community.

“This when you get out here and you start playing, it doesn’t matter how good you are. It just feels good. If you’re if you’re, 70 years old and, you’re done with golf and whatever else, come out here and do this.” – (Campbell)

While Lou believes skill isn’t everything, those who watch him play know he has serious talent. He’ll take the court on Sunday, aiming to bring more hardware back to Minnesota.

Looking Ahead to Another Medal

Campbell’s story reflects the growing popularity of pickleball among older adults and shows how the sport offers new opportunities at any age. His return to the US Open marks a personal milestone and an inspiring message to others: it’s never too late to start something new. Fans can follow his performance through Northern News Now on Sunday night, where updates will be shared.
