The Tulip City Open pickleball tournament returns to Holland, Michigan, on Friday, May 2, as part of the 96th Tulip Time Festival. Hosted at MVP Sports Holland, the event expects nearly 300 players and will raise money for Gateway Mission, a local non-profit and homeless shelter.
Strong Turnout for Second Year
After a strong debut last year, the tournament has quickly grown in popularity. This year’s event expanded with extra time slots but still neared its 300-player cap. At the close of registration, 284 participants had signed up.
All profits will support Gateway Mission and the Tulip Time non-profit. Gateway Mission is completely funded by donations and receives no federal aid. Last year’s tournament exceeded its $10,000 fundraising goal, and organizers expect to repeat that success.
Fundraising With a Purpose
Jason Parks, community relations director at Gateway Mission and a pickleball player, said events like this are key to their work.
“There’s literally a pickleball tournament every weekend in Michigan. This year was kind of a trial to say, ‘do we have enough numbers to justify all the work we put into it?’ We were blown away by how many people registered.” – (Jason Parks)
The shelter has seen growing need. This year, Gateway Mission has served between 165 and 200 people—nearly double the number from 2022.
“We’re putting roofs over more people’s heads, we’re feeding more people three square meals a day. We rely on events like this and community donors. Events like this really have an impact on the people we serve, greatly.” – (Jason Parks)
Prizes, Spectators, and Community Fun
Though registration is now closed, spectators are invited to attend, though indoor seating is limited. Winners of the men’s singles and doubles events will take home $500 each, funded by player entry fees. Prizes include a paddle from Holland-based Revolin Sports and balls from Franklin.
Event merchandise and raffle prizes will also be available, helping raise even more support for Gateway Mission. The Tulip City Open has quickly become a major part of the festival. With strong community support and growing participation, the event is expected to continue as a popular annual tradition.
