Zillah Opens New Pickleball Courts: The city of Zillah officially opened six new pickleball courts on April 27, transforming aging tennis courts into a modern play space. The project, made possible through state funding and local leadership, offers a new recreational outlet for players in the Yakima Valley.
Community and State Leaders Help Make It Happen
The new courts were built with support from the state Capital Budget. City Administrator Michael Grayum led the effort, working alongside former State Rep. Bryan Sandlin, former Rep. Bruce Chandler, and Sen. Nikki Torres to secure funding.
Final painting and line work were completed just before the courts opened. The courts are now open to the public. City officials say the new space is part of a growing park system that brings the community together.
Pickleball Continues to Grow in Washington
Washington named pickleball its official state sport in 2022. Since then, the game has grown quickly across the region, including the Yakima Valley. More people of all ages are picking up paddles and joining in.
“This weekend in Zillah is a perfect snapshot of what makes our community so special—welcoming, energetic, and full of fun,” said Michael Grayum, City Administrator.

A New Way to Play and Connect
The courts are already drawing interest from local residents. Players are encouraged to bring their paddles and enjoy the new space. The city hopes the courts will offer a fun, active place for people to meet and play. With support from city leaders and the community, the project shows how shared ideas can create lasting changes.
