The second annual Play for Good pickleball tournament raised approximately $15,000 for local charities in Alpharetta, Georgia, on April 26 and 27. Hosted at the North Park Tennis & Pickleball Center, the event attracted around 140 players, all passionate about supporting their community through the sport.
A Competitive Yet Charitable Event
Sandy Holiday, executive director of North Fulton County Community Charities, highlighted the dual focus of the event.
“We have people here that are very passionate about serving the community and very passionate about pickleball.” – (Sandy Holiday)
Players competed fiercely, but the primary goal was to raise money for a good cause. Todd Jarvis, one of the tournament participants, emphasized his motivation to support the community.
“Whether it’s food banks, shelters, anything they can do to get back to the community, I think it’s very important.” – (Todd Jarvis)
Funding Community Support
The funds raised will help North Fulton County Community Charities provide emergency rent assistance, food pantries, and thrift stores. The organization also plans to host a career fair on May 6 to connect employers with job seekers.
Competitive Spirit on the Court
Despite the charitable purpose, the matches were full of intensity. Players sprinted across the courts, engaging in fast-paced battles. At least one player shouted in frustration after missing a shot. “Second place is the first loser,” said Jarvis, capturing the competitive spirit of the tournament.
“We come out to have fun and come out for a good cause, but you also come out to win.” – (Jarvis)
Jarvis, who initially dismissed pickleball as “silly,” has become an avid player. He now plays the sport three to four times a week. “It’s a game I never thought I would enjoy,” he admitted. “I’m addicted.”
Impact on the Community
The Play for Good tournament not only raised significant funds but also brought attention to the growing popularity of pickleball. The event’s success highlights how sports can bring people together for fun and charity, with the proceeds benefiting local families in need.
