Buzz, Laughter, and Fast Rallies: NE Campus Pickleball Event Draws Students Into the Action

NE Campus Pickleball Event Highlights: Dozens of students gathered on April 23 at the NE Campus tennis courts to learn and play pickleball. The event, hosted by NE Student Activities, welcomed players of all skill levels, offering a fun and active way for students to try a growing sport in a casual setting.

Learning the Game Together

The courts were full of energy as students picked up paddles and got moving. The bounce of the plastic ball and laughter filled the air as students played singles and doubles matches. Pickleball, which uses a paddle and a Wiffle ball-like plastic ball, is played on a small court with a low net. It’s a popular option for those looking for a low-impact sport that’s easy to learn.

Jordin Bryan, a student development associate who helped plan the event, said the sport offers both fun and health benefits. “Pickleball is fun, and if you play doubles, it is better on your knees,” Bryan said.

Fitness and Fun for All

Many students said they enjoyed the balance of competition and ease of play. For some, it was their first time trying pickleball, while others came to improve their skills. “Pickleball is a great learning opportunity for a great health activity,” said NE student Zander Grijulva.

NE student Aaron McGrue added, “Pickleball is competitive without hard work. I recommend it, and it is for everyone, all ages.” Students rotated courts, played doubles matches, and cheered each other on. Equipment was provided by the school, though some brought their own paddles.

A Buzzing Distraction

The event briefly paused when a swarm of honey bees passed over the courts. Students and staff ducked for cover, but no one was stung. Once the bees moved on, play quickly resumed. Waylan Shinn, a NE student who plays with his family, shared a personal note. “It gets you out of the house,” Shinn said. “My dad beats me when playing pickleball.”

Looking Ahead

Organizers hope to host more pickleball events in the future as interest grows. Across the country, pickleball is becoming more popular, with millions playing the sport, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. Students say they are eager for more opportunities to stay active and have fun through events like this one.
