Student-Led Pickleball Craze Sweeps Massapequa High: Inside the New After-School Hit

Massapequa High School Pickleball Program: Massapequa High School has launched a new afterschool pickleball program that will run through May. Nearly 30 students joined the first session on March 31. The program meets three times a week and was started by seniors Jack Boland and Robert Coll.

Students Lead the Way

The idea for the intramural began with Boland and Coll, who picked up the sport at local parks. Wanting to share their passion, they brought the idea to school.

“We thought it would be a good way to bring everyone together and stay active,” Robert said, who added that it was rewarding to see the idea come to fruition.

“It gets me outside and it’s a great way to bond with my friends and meet new people,” Jack added about what appealed to him about the sport.

Once approved, the pair promoted the program through Instagram and word of mouth. They were thrilled by the turnout at the first meeting and hope participation grows.

“People seem very excited,” Coll said. “The enthusiasm has been awesome. It’s a very simple sport. It has a low floor and a high ceiling.”

Gym Transformed into Courts

The school’s main gym can fit six courts. Badminton nets are hung just above the floor to form the playing areas. The school bought some paddles, but many students bring their equipment.

Physical education and athletics Chairperson Brian Rath and teacher Leigh Ann Zimmer supervise each session. Games begin after a short rules review, and players are matched by skill level.

“It’s an up-and-coming activity,” Rath said of pickleball’s growing popularity. “It’s a sport that anybody can play.”

Growing Interest in the Game

The program welcomes all students, from first-time players to those with experience. With simple rules and active play, pickleball continues to gain fans among teens. As the afterschool sessions continue, organizers hope more students join and the program becomes a lasting part of the school’s intramural offerings.
