Hartford’s West Side Park Opens Game-Changing Pickleball Complex—Community Rallies for Grand Opening

Hartford Pickleball Complex: The City of Hartford began work this week on a new six-court pickleball complex at West Side Park, located at 544 West Sumner Street. City staff started site excavation on Monday, and the facility is expected to be finished by the end of June, weather permitting.

Construction Underway at West Side Park

To save money, the City of Hartford chose to have its own staff begin the rough site work before the hired contractor, Poblocki Paving Corporation, steps in. The company will handle the final grading, paving, court painting, and landscaping. Poblocki is expected to take over after mid-May.

The courts are being built as a stand-alone facility to meet the growing interest in pickleball. The city plans to celebrate the opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in July.

Fencing and Future Amenities

Fencing around the new courts was originally scheduled for a future phase. However, thanks to local donors, fencing will now be installed during the current construction. The city is reviewing quotes to choose a company to handle that part of the project.

Hartford is also planning additional upgrades in the future. These include benches, tables, and a shaded seating area. Estimated costs for the items are:

  • Benches: $2,000
  • Tables: $3,000
  • Shade structure: $15,000

To help cover the costs, the city is still accepting donations. Naming rights for the seating area are also available. Anyone interested in donating is asked to contact the Hartford Parks and Recreation Department.

Project Impact and Community Involvement

The new pickleball complex is expected to serve residents and visitors, providing a dedicated space for recreational and competitive play. The project reflects the city’s efforts to enhance local parks and offer more options for active lifestyles.

By involving city workers and accepting community donations, Hartford is showing a strong commitment to building community spaces while keeping costs low. These new courts will likely become a popular spot once completed, supporting fitness and social activity in the area.
