Tony Martinez Tops Southern Pickleball Rankings: Tony Martinez, a 72-year-old pickleball player, has earned top honors from the Southern Pickleball Association (SPA) for his performance in the 2024 season. He was ranked as the number one player in the men’s 70-plus age division, accumulating 3,225 points, including 1,800 gold, 825 silver, and 600 bronze points.
Outstanding Performance in 2024
Tony Martinez’s impressive performance put him ahead of the competition, as he finished with the highest total points in the men’s 70-plus division. His closest competitor, Marc Lugash, earned 2,100 points. Martinez also ranked fourth overall in points across all age groups and genders, making him the top male player for the season.
The SPA’s 2024 season covered eight states, and Martinez’s achievements were recognized at a pickleball tournament in Newnan on April 27, 2025, where SPA Co-Founder Eddie Gomez presented the honors. The 2025 season will expand to ten states, making it a tougher challenge for Martinez to maintain his top spot.
Thomaston’s Strong Presence in the SPA
Martinez is not the only successful player from Thomaston. The town has become a hotspot for top pickleball players, with names like Wayne Green (eighth in the 70-plus division), Randy Oglesbee (21st in the 70-plus division), and AJ Pollard, Bruce Dunaway, and Jenna Dunaway all appearing in the SPA’s top rankings.
Tony Martinez’s Humble Outlook
Despite his success, Tony Martinez remains humble. During a meeting with The Beacon alongside Wayne Green and Pam Blakeney, he downplayed the accolades, focusing instead on the fun of the game.
“It’s a social event. We have friends wherever we go that play,” Martinez said. “It’s the most fun you can have exercising,” he added, reflecting on his five years of playing the sport. Martinez is also passionate about teaching others to play and sharing his love for the game.
Looking Forward
Martinez’s achievements highlight his dedication and the growing popularity of pickleball in Thomaston. As the SPA expands its coverage in 2025, it will be interesting to see if Martinez can continue his winning streak and inspire others to take up the sport.
