New Berlin’s Pickleball Courts: The City of New Berlin in Wisconsin plans to tear down the community pavilion at Lions Park this fall. City documents show that 12 outdoor pickleball courts may be built in its place. The project would also upgrade the south end of the park and improve the parking lot.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $60,000. The proposal is still in its early stages and needs approval from the New Berlin Common Council. A final decision on whether the courts will be added has not yet been made.
Consultant Chosen for Project
At a meeting on Monday, the New Berlin Plan Commission confirmed that raSmith, a civil engineering firm based in Brookfield, will serve as the project consultant. However, Greg Kessler, director of the Department of Community Development for New Berlin, said the Common Council must approve raSmith before any planning can begin.
“Once approved, the city can proceed with executing the contract with raSmith, surveying the site, reviewing existing park amenities, and evaluating amenity options in the context of mitigation measures and community needs.” – (Greg Kessler)
Courts Could Add to Park Features
The city’s planning documents listed pickleball courts as the top choice for redevelopment. But the space could still be left open for other uses, according to Greg Kessler.
If the courts are built, they would join the park’s many existing features, including soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, a baseball diamond, volleyball courts, and a playground. The plan includes extra items such as fencing, shade, lights, windscreens, and landscaping.
Timeline and Community Impact
The city hopes to finish a conceptual design by October 2025. Bidding for construction would start by the winter of 2026. The goal is to create a space that meets local needs and boosts outdoor activities.
As pickleball grows in southeastern Wisconsin, the courts at Lions Park would add to the city’s current locations for the sport. These include the New Berlin Activity & Recreation Center and the Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin Indoor Sports Complex.
