Burlington’s New Pickleball Courts: A brand-new pickleball complex opened on Friday afternoon, May 9, at Burlington City Park in North Carolina. The new facility features 17 courts, shaded seating areas, and plans for events such as clinics and tournaments. Hundreds of people attended the grand opening to celebrate this new space for community fun and fitness.
The courts are available for all Burlington residents. Memberships offer extra benefits like court rentals, a ball machine, and discounts on gear. City officials and locals hope the complex will grow into a popular gathering spot for players of all ages and skill levels.
Celebration Brings Together Community Members
The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, beginner lessons, raffles, and family fun. Mebane resident Sheila Simpson was among the crowd. She started playing pickleball just nine months ago after recovering from a broken ankle.
“Everybody was really nice and welcoming and very encouraging,” Sheila Simpson said. “Everyone plays with everyone and I think it’s wonderful.”
Josh Stewart, who works with the Burlington Sock Puppets baseball team as the “director of fun,” also helped out at the event. He has played pickleball for over five years and was excited to finally have a place to play in his hometown.
“It’s a privilege to be a part of this community that’s growing and honestly becoming even more fun than it’s already been,” Josh Stewart said.
Mural Adds Local Color to the Complex
In one corner of the complex, a special mural decorates the practice court. It was painted by Burlington artist Artie Barksdale III. He started the artwork in October and finished it just before the opening.
“What I like about it most was that the city and I were all in on it,” Artie Barksdale III said. “When you got that many people agreeing and cheering you on, that’s what gave it the momentum that it needed to become the beautiful piece of artwork it is today.”
The mural adds a unique touch and shows how art and sports can come together in a community project.
Players of All Ages Take Part
Pickleball players of all ages took part in the event. Kids like 11-year-old Drew, 8-year-old Vida, and 9-year-old Colton came with their families and had fun trying out the courts. “If you’re coming to this pickleball court, I hope you have a great time,” Colton said.
Josh Stewart was also impressed by the talent he saw from local players and said he plans to work hard to improve his game. “I’m committed to the grind of whatever it takes to be one of the best pickleball players here,” Josh Stewart said.
What the New Complex Means for Burlington
The new pickleball facility gives Burlington residents a place to stay active, meet others, and enjoy a fast-growing sport. For beginners like Sheila Simpson and young players like Colton, it’s a place to learn and have fun. For experienced players like Josh Stewart, it’s a chance to grow their skills.
By offering lessons, events, and family activities, the complex is expected to bring more people together and strengthen the local pickleball scene.
