South Nashville’s Pickleball Center: A large empty building in South Nashville may become a pickleball center, but Metro Councilmember Ginny Welsch wants the land used for affordable housing. The building, located at the site of the former Nashville Furniture Warehouse, has been vacant since earlier development plans failed.
Development Plan Fell Through
The original plan was to build a mixed-use space with 390 affordable housing units and retail stores. However, Metro Councilmember Ginny Welsch said the project fell apart because the developers had financial issues.
Since then, the lot has remained unused. A “For Lease” sign now stands in front of the property, showing that the land is back on the market.
Pickleball Proposal Sparks Concern
Councilmember Ginny Welsch said a new developer wants to turn the space into a pickleball facility.
“That’s not necessarily what I would want there. I would like more mixed-use development there, I would like more housing there because that’s such a great location.” – (Ginny Welsch)
She explained that the spot is near Nolensville Road and Thompson Lane. These are major roads that are part of the city’s new transit plan.
“It’s near transit. Nolensville and Thompson are huge transit corridors with the new transit plan. So I really hoped we’d get more housing built in that space.” – (Ginny Welsch)
Housing Still a Possibility
The full lot covers 4.5 acres. Councilmember Ginny Welsch said that even if the pickleball facility is built, there could still be room for housing. She plans to push for that option.
