How Jefferson Parish’s New Pickleball Courts Are Uniting Players of All Ages

Jefferson Parish Pickleball Courts: Jefferson Parish has opened new public pickleball courts at Mike Miley Playground in Metairie, Louisiana, drawing players of all ages and skill levels. The courts use a simple “bucket system” to organize matches, helping new and experienced players join games easily.

The new courts have already attracted many players since opening. The goal is to support the growing interest in pickleball and offer more ways for people to be active and connect with others. Ethan Pipitone, who once doubted the sport, now plays regularly and serves as a local pickleball ambassador.

“I thought it was a silly sport at first. It’s really addicting, it’s super fun, and your progression is very apparent, you can tell when you’ve gotten better, and it’s a good feeling.” – (Pipitone)

Simple System to Get Everyone Playing

The courts use a paddle bucket system. When players arrive, they place their paddle in a bucket labeled by skill level—novice to advanced. Once four paddles are in the same bucket, those players get the next available court.

“Basically, people can come, and even if all the courts are filled, they should be able to play a game of pickleball,” Jefferson Parish’s Chief Administrative Assistant, Mario Bazile, said.

This system makes it easy to mix into games with players of similar ability. It also keeps things fair and welcoming for beginners and more seasoned players.

Community Grows Around the Game

Pickleball has quickly become a community-building activity in Jefferson Parish. Ethan Pipitone says it’s a game for everyone and that it brings people together in unique ways.

“Anyone is able to play it, it’s easy to build community, you can play with someone who’s 50 years older than you and they can still whoop your butt.” – (Pipitone)

Even in the short time since the courts opened, Mario Bazile and Ethan Pipitone have noticed a strong turnout. Players new to the sport and long-time fans are showing up to try out the new space. They hope this public facility will help pickleball grow even more in the area, offering a fun, low-barrier way to get active.
