Westmoor Park Pickleball Courts: Construction near the new pickleball courts at Westmoor Park in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, is moving forward. The Scottsbluff City Council approved an $85,000 contract with Mark Christman Trucking to complete concrete work around the courts before final surfacing can begin.
The project is part of a larger plan to make the courts more accessible and user-friendly. Scottsbluff Parks and Recreation Director Matt Carpenter explained what the updates will include and why they are important for the area.
Additions to Support Access and Comfort
Because the courts are raised 14 inches above the ground, the plan includes building a ramp to meet ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards. A new sidewalk, a patio with a covered area, and added parking are also part of the improvements. Two handicap parking spaces will be paved, making it easier for everyone to reach the courts.
This work must be finished before the final court surfacing can begin. That step will come once all the concrete areas are in place.
“We’re going to add an ADA ramp to the courts now that there are about 14 inches above grade. That also includes a sidewalk and patio area on the west side, which will include a covered structure as well, and then an expansion of the parking off the alleyway and then the paving of two handicap spots in there as well, and then the sidewalk all the way to the courts.” – (Matt Carpenter)
Funding and Progress
The total cost for the pickleball court project is nearly $400,000. Most of the funding comes from ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds, which are meant to support community development and recovery. The updates are meant to improve comfort, access, and play for everyone in the community.
Once the concrete is finished, the final touches on the courts will follow. The city hopes the courts will soon be ready for public use and encourage more people to get involved in the sport.
