Sheffield Lake Pickleball Program: The city of Sheffield Lake will begin a new adult pickleball program on May 19. Organized by the city’s Recreation Department, the program will offer free, open-play sessions on Monday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. through June 30. Adults aged 18 and older can join with no registration required.
Indoor games will be held at Knollwood Elementary School’s gymnasium, located at 4975 Oster Road. Later in the summer, sessions will move outdoors to the basketball courts at Gary Green Memorial Park at 4816 Richilieu Avenue.
Recreation Department Brings Pickleball to the Community
The pickleball program comes as part of the city’s efforts to grow its newly restored Recreation Department. Zack Kantouros, who became director of the department in 2024, said the goal is to offer more activities locally.
“Our department is still newer, and we’re just excited to bring things like this to the community.” – (Kantouros)
Participants are encouraged to bring their paddles and play in a casual setting.
“It’s pretty similar to what other communities have been doing. If people don’t want to leave our community to do these types of things, now they don’t have to.” – (Kantouros)
A Response to the Pickleball Craze
The program is Sheffield Lake’s answer to the rising popularity of pickleball. More and more people in the area have taken an interest in the sport.
“Everyone’s kind of gone pickleball crazy lately. I think that it’s gotten more popular, so we wanted to be able to offer our citizens and our community a chance to participate in a sport.” – (Kantouros)
By keeping the program simple and free, the city hopes to attract new and experienced players. It also helps build a stronger local community through fun and fitness.
