How Taylor University’s Sunrise Pickleball Group Is Transforming Mornings and Building Community

Taylor University’s Sunrise Pickleball Group: A group of Taylor University faculty members and others gather early in the morning to play pickleball on campus. They meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 a.m., and sometimes on Saturdays at 7:30 a.m., to enjoy fun, fitness, and friendship before the workday begins.

Pickleball at Sunrise

The group began in May 2023, started by Robert Sisson, a Taylor University graduate and husband of Carol Sisson, who is an associate professor of education and director of orphans and vulnerable children at the university. The players include faculty members, students, children of faculty, and community members.

They use the GroupMe app to decide who will play. There’s no set schedule. Anyone free just sends a message like, “Hey I’m playing.” Most of the games are played in doubles, and Sisson tries to get people to come in groups of four. So far, the largest group has been 16 players. Before playing, they begin each session with a short prayer.

Bonding Over the Game

Stephen Olson, Taylor University’s chief financial officer and vice president of business and finance, was one of the first to join. He has played regularly ever since.

“It’s fun and competitive, but also really communal. I’ve met people through pickleball that I never would’ve otherwise.” – (Olson)

Olson noted that everyone in the group gets along well. He said being part of the group has helped him form new friendships and grow closer to others at the university.

Chris Jones, Taylor University’s vice president, chief of staff, and chief information officer, is also a regular. For him, the sport is about more than just staying active.

“It’s a fun form of exercise with friends that is also a fun game.” – (Chris Jones)

Why It Works

The group includes players from teenagers to adults in their 70s. Age doesn’t matter, and anyone is welcome.

“It’s a way of socialization, building friendships, getting exercise and having fun together and in a semi-structured, but not no commitment sort of way.” – (Chris Jones)

Some players used to exercise at that time anyway. Now, they use that hour to play with friends. For those who work all day at a desk, like Chris Jones, the activity is helpful. Stephen Olson said the group has made a difference in how he feels during the day.

“It’s life-giving to start your day moving, laughing, and being with others.” – (Olson)

Taylor University’s new pickleball courts have made it even easier for the group to play. With regular meetups and a growing list of players, the group continues to show how sports can bring people together.
