Pickleball Meets Policing: Eagle Mountain’s ‘Serve and Protect’ Event Aims to Break Down Barriers

Serve and Protect Pickleball Event: The Utah County Sheriff’s Office Eagle Mountain division is inviting residents to a new community pickleball event called “Serve and Protect” on Saturday, from 8 to 10 a.m., at Cory B. Wride Memorial Park. The goal is to bring deputies and the public together through a friendly game of pickleball.

The event was created to help people and law enforcement connect in a relaxed, fun way. Residents will have the chance to play with or against deputies in games designed for all ages and skill levels.

Building Trust Through Play

“Serve and Protect” was suggested by Deputy Michael Chidester. He said the event gives deputies a chance to be seen as more than just officers in stressful times.

“A lot of the time when people see us, it’s in stressful or emergency situations. This gives us a chance to connect on neutral ground — to just be people, playing a game, having fun. That kind of interaction can really build trust.” – (Michael Chidester)

The event is free to attend. People are encouraged to bring their paddle and enjoy the games or simply watch from the sidelines. There will also be time for chatting, asking questions, and learning about safety programs.

A Community-Focused Effort

Cory B. Wride Memorial Park has several pickleball courts, making it easy to hold multiple games at once. Organizers say players can join games that match their skill level, whether beginner or advanced.

Residents who prefer not to play can still be part of the event. Deputies will share public safety tips and information on how to stay safe in the community. Eagle Mountain Communications Manager Tyler Maffitt said the city fully supports the effort.

“Community safety is a top priority for us, and events like this help build stronger relationships between law enforcement and residents. We’re grateful for the deputies, who have been practicing hard, to go above and beyond for our community.” – (Maffitt)

Looking to the Future

If the first event is well received, the sheriff’s office may hold more pickleball meetups during the summer.

“We’d love to turn this into something we can host every couple of weeks. It’s a simple thing, but it makes a big impact.” – (Michael Chidester)

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to attend. Whether playing or just watching, all are welcome to take part in this effort to build better connections.

News in Brief: Serve and Protect Pickleball Event

Eagle Mountain deputies will host “Serve and Protect,” a free pickleball event on Saturday, May 18, from 8 to 10 a.m. at Cory B. Wride Memorial Park. The event aims to improve community relationships through friendly matches and public safety chats. All ages and skill levels are welcome.
