How the Wier Park’s Pickleball Court Expansion Is Changing West University Place

Wier Park’s Pickleball Court Expansion: Two new pickleball courts are being added to Wier Park in West University Place, Texas. Once the updates are finished around May 31, the park will have four total courts. The project was approved earlier in May by the city’s Parks and Recreation board after a recommendation from the Tennis and Pickleball Committee.

Courts to Get New Lines and Layout

The current pickleball courts at Wier Park will be restriped to create space for the new courts. Old markings will be removed, and fresh lines will be added to fit the expanded court layout. This will allow more people to play at the same time.

The divider fence between the courts will also be changed. Most of the middle fencing will be taken out. Only the fence areas near the outside edges will remain, according to a May 19 update from city officials.

City Responds to Growing Interest

The decision to add more courts comes after city leaders discussed the rising popularity of pickleball. Since early 2024, officials from the Planning and Zoning Department have talked about the sport during City Council meetings.

John Cutrer, Chair of the West University Planning and Zoning Commission, spoke during the April 2024 meeting. He said the city is seeing more people playing pickleball.

Closures During Upgrades

The courts at Wier Park will be closed while the work is being done. This starts on May 22, according to the city’s May 19 announcement. However, the rest of the park will stay open to visitors during the construction. The city is working with a contractor to make the changes safely and quickly.

A Growing Game for the Community

These upgrades show how the city is adapting to what residents want. More courts mean more people can enjoy the sport together. It also reflects how fast the game is growing in local neighborhoods. The new layout and changes could lead to even more interest and future improvements.
