Anderson Park Opens College Station’s First Dedicated Pickleball Courts and More

Anderson Park Pickleball Courts Opening: College Station officially opened its new pickleball and multi-use courts at Anderson Park on Tuesday morning, May 21. The ribbon cutting, led by Mayor John Nichols, marked the completion of the city’s first recreational project funded by the 2022 bond election.

New Courts Ready for Use

Just after the ribbon was cut, members of the Brazos Valley Pickleball Association stepped onto the four new pickleball courts to begin play. These are the first courts in the area built only for pickleball.

This is a great day for pickleball. We are so excited and thankful to the city of College Station and their leadership,” said Brazos Valley Pickleball Association President Joe Hegwood.

They consulted with us when they built this thing and we were able to give them some input. I would say this is the only dedicated or specifically built pickleball facility in the area.” – (Joe Hegwood)

The new facility also includes two multi-use courts for sports like futsal, bike polo, and roller hockey.

More Additions to Anderson Park

The improvements at Anderson Park are not limited to the courts. The project includes LED lighting for all new courts and extra parking space. These additions support the existing grass fields, basketball courts, and playground already at the park. College Station Parks and Recreation Director Kelsey Heiden said,

As you can see from the attendance today people are really excited about this project. We were really thrilled to get it up and open and ready for people to use. All these groups, the futsal community, the bike polo community, pickleball community are all thrilled to have this space. They are ready to teach more people about their sports and their communities.” – (Kelsey Heiden)

Community Excitement for New Features

After the ceremony, Mayor John Nichols visited the new bike polo court and watched the group play their first game on the fresh surface.

I’m amazed by the bike polo. I don’t know anything about it. It sounds a little crazy to me but I’m interested in learning more about it. This whole complex is fantastic. It’s built first class. It’s a fantastic addition to the recreational opportunities we have in College Station.” – (John Nichols)

What It Means for the City

The new courts bring more sports options to College Station residents. They offer space for growing sports like pickleball and bike polo. With more lighting and parking, the park is ready to welcome more visitors. The success of this project may lead to more improvements funded by the 2022 bond.
