Denver’s Pickleball Court Proposal: The city of Denver is looking for someone to build and manage new outdoor pickleball courts at the corner of Colfax Avenue and Broadway, near RTD’s Civic Center Station. The operator will run the courts for five years, with a chance to extend the contract for one more year. The goal is to bring more activities and public space to this busy part of the city.
Bringing New Life to a Vacant Lot
The land, an empty gravel lot sometimes called the Wu-Tang Commemorative Gravel Pit, will be made ready by the city with basic improvements. The selected operator will be responsible for planning, designing, and installing the courts and then safely maintaining them. According to the city’s request for proposals,
“The sole purpose of this solicitation is for an Operator to install, operate and maintain outdoor pickleball courts and provide high-quality programs and services to members and the general public, including but not limited to residents, visitors and the Downtown workforce.” – (city of Denver proposal)
The city wants the courts to serve locals, tourists, and workers downtown.
A Call for Creative Investment
Pickleball is growing fast, and its courts are fairly cheap to build. The Denver courts will stand out because they will have an on-site manager likely working from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The city hopes this project will boost community life and make better use of public spaces in downtown Denver. The location is one of the loudest intersections in the city. Because of that, the city is asking whoever runs the courts to keep noise levels down.
“Now is the time for creative investment and public-private partnerships that embody the spirit of Downtown Denver as the epicenter of economic activity, culture, athletics and the place where community is celebrated, and everyone belongs.” – (city of Denver proposal)
Looking Ahead
By turning an empty lot into a pickleball space, Denver aims to improve quality of life downtown. The plan could create more reasons for people to visit, stay active, and enjoy public spaces.
“Investing in pickleball is a smart, scalable way to meet the evolving needs of residents and promote civic well-being.” – (city of Denver proposal)
The city now waits for proposals and will choose a team ready to design, build, and manage this active new corner of downtown.
