Frankfort Unites to Build New Pickleball Courts: The city of Frankfort has built two new pickleball courts at Market Square Park. The project was made possible through a partnership with Frankfort Pickleball and community donations. Most of the $80,000 cost was covered by local fundraising, and the courts are set to be striped in June.
City and Community Work Together
Frankfort City Superintendent Josh Mills confirmed the new pickleball courts have been added alongside a tennis court that is also striped for pickleball use. The tennis court does not have a fixed pickleball net, but a portable one can be used.
“Last fall, we removed the two tennis courts that were there. We installed the new courts and got some new fencing put in.” – (Josh Mills)
The cost of removing the old courts and building the new ones came to just under $80,000.
“Everything but about $1,000 was covered by donations. We got donations from city groups, civic groups and members of the public.” – (Josh Mills)
Local Pickleball Group Led the Way
The group Frankfort Pickleball has been raising funds and support since 2022. Lisa Fleet, a member of Frankfort Pickleball, explained how the project began.
“Our group was very informal. Denny Holcombe and Denise Schubert got things started when the city was first looking at just resurfacing the courts.” – (Lisa Fleet)
The Frankfort team also worked with Lakeside Pickleball, a larger group, to boost their fundraising efforts. “Lakeside Pickleball helped us by advertising our campaign,” Lisa Fleet said. The joint effort brought in about $48,000. She added that excitement is growing in the community.
“As the courts near completion, people are getting excited to play and they can’t wait for early June. We’re going to hold some sort of event to celebrate the courts.” – (Lisa Fleet)
She also expressed her gratitude.
“We want to thank community members and vendors who stood by us from day one.” – (Lisa Fleet)
City Praises Community Involvement
Josh Mills noted the city had plans to fix the courts but faced budget limits.
“Without the public’s help, the courts wouldn’t have been renovated. The city wouldn’t have had the financial ability to address the courts if it wasn’t for collaborating with the community. They saw a need and they moved forward immediately. They did a great job of raising awareness, not just in Frankfort but outside of the city.” – (Josh Mills)
A Win for Recreation in Frankfort
This new project brings more options for outdoor fun and sports to Market Square Park. Thanks to strong support from residents and groups, Frankfort now has updated courts that will serve many for years to come. The planned celebration in June marks the beginning of a new chapter for local pickleball fans.
