Lexington Opens 20 New Pickleball Courts—Is This the City’s Hottest Fitness Craze?

Lexington’s Pickleball Court Expansion: Lexington has opened 20 new pickleball courts and eight tennis courts at Shillito Park near Fayette Mall to meet growing demand for the sport. The ribbon-cutting took place Wednesday as the city continues expanding its recreational spaces to serve a rising number of pickleball players.

Pickleball is now the fastest-growing sport in the U.S., according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association. Its player numbers jumped from 3.3 million in 2018 to 19.8 million in 2024. Lexington’s new courts add to more than 50 public pickleball courts across Fayette County.

Growing Popularity and City Response

Connie Hajash, who played tennis most of her life, found pickleball after retiring as a pharmacy technician. She described the sport as “an addiction, really.” She plays with friends in the West Side Pickleballers club, which even created a version called “Triple Pickle” where six players compete instead of four. Mayor Linda Gorton spoke at the opening event.

“It’s no secret that this has been one of our most highly anticipated parks projects in the last couple of years. Our growing pickleball community, many of whom are here, is eager to have more locations to play.” – (Linda Gorton)

The city plans to open more courts this year with the completion of Cardinal Run Park North. Public pickleball courts will then be available in 13 city-run parks, while tennis courts will be at 15. The $2.9 million for these projects came from the American Rescue Plan Act.

Benefits of Pickleball and New Facilities

Pickleball is played with paddles on a smaller court, similar to tennis, and can be played in singles or doubles. Players say it is very accessible and easy to learn, making it popular for all ages and skill levels. Adrienne Thakur, Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation, highlighted the health benefits. She said,

“Having access to parks not only improves physical health by lowering instances of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes, but also improves mental health by creating a sense of community.” – (Adrienne Thakur)

“There is a large part of our community that wants to be served by this, and it’s important to show that Parks and Recreation is responsive to what the community needs are, and what the industry trends are.” – (Adrienne Thakur)

“It’s a fun sport. It’s a great, easy way to get some steps in, to get a little aerobic exercise and to test your skills. It’s very accessible.” – (Adrienne Thakur)

What This Means for the Community

With more courts opening, Lexington offers new opportunities for people to stay active and meet others. The growing interest in pickleball shows the city is adapting to community needs and national sports trends. This expansion is likely to encourage more residents to try the game and enjoy its health and social benefits.
