McHenry Unveils Six New Pickleball Courts: Six new pickleball courts are now open in McHenry, Illinois, just in time for the holiday weekend. The new courts are located at Knox Park and increase the total number of courts in the city to 12, according to Bill Hobson, Director of Parks and Recreation.

The courts were added to a space in Knox Park that was once part of the skateboard area. The original wooden ramps and rails had become unsafe and were removed. That part of the park was later used for a Safety Town setup, but it was rarely used.
The city decided to repurpose the area again by building new pickleball courts. These courts do not have lights, unlike the other courts in town, Hobson said.
Pickleball Options Across the City
Before the new courts opened, McHenry already had two dedicated pickleball courts at Knox Park and two at Petersen Park. In addition to these, the tennis courts at both parks have pickleball lines painted on them, so players can use them for either sport.
With the new additions, players now have more places to enjoy the fast-growing game. The total of 12 courts across McHenry shows how the sport continues to grow in popularity in the area.
Future Upgrades at Knox Park
More improvements are planned for Knox Park. Mayor Wayne Jett shared that the RISE Up Foundation’s 2025 McHenry Music Festival will raise money to build a large bike pump track.
The project includes a 15,000-square-foot track for advanced riders and a 1,000-square-foot area for beginners. A trail will also circle the park and link to the nearby skate park.
