Dothan Greenlights 1.5M Dollar Pickleball Complex: Could This Become the South’s Next Pickleball Hotspot?

Dothan’s Pickleball Complex: The City of Dothan has approved the construction of a $1.5 million pickleball complex. The new pickleball facility will be built near Rip Hewes Stadium, starting in June 2025. It will include 25 covered pickleball courts and one championship court, aiming to serve residents and attract sports tourism.

City officials hope the complex will help grow local pickleball while bringing tournaments that boost the economy. Lewis Construction, LLC, will lead the building project. The work is expected to finish by early spring next year.

Meeting Local Needs and Boosting Tourism

The project was approved to meet the high demand for pickleball in the area. It’s also meant to draw large events that bring players and visitors from outside Dothan. The location near Rip Hewes Stadium was chosen because it already has the space and access needed.

“We want to be able to provide something for our citizens to be able to use on a daily basis as well as being able to have the sports tourism to bring in those large tournaments that can help with lodging and sales tax.” – (City Manager Randy Morris)

Building One of the Region’s Top Venues

The new complex will be one of the largest in the area once it is complete. The championship court will allow for high-level matches, while the other 24 courts will support casual and competitive play.

Lewis Construction, LLC is expected to begin work in June. City leaders believe the project will be finished by spring 2026. Once opened, the courts will be available daily to residents and visitors.

“I am very excited about the future of pickleball here in the wiregrass area with the new addition of 25 covered courts coming soon. The facility should bring in lots of players from all over and will likely be a hotspot for large tournaments here in the southeast. I currently train and teach many players from the wiregrass and am excited to keep growing the game and talent here when the new courts are finished.” – (Logan Thompson, pickleball player)

A Growing Sport with Big Potential

Pickleball continues to grow fast in the United States. By building this complex, Dothan hopes to attract major events that can bring in extra income from hotels, restaurants, and local stores. This project shows the city’s commitment to community sports and economic growth.
