Grant-Funded Pickleball Courts Set to Transform McWhorter Park and Ease Crowds in Longview

McWhorter Park Pickleball Courts: The Longview Economic Development Corporation has approved a grant to build two new pickleball courts at McWhorter Park. These courts will include fencing and lights, making it possible for people to play even after sunset during the warmer summer months.

The new courts are part of a city plan to improve parks and offer more ways for residents to enjoy outdoor activities.

Added Space for Popular Sport

Pickleball is growing fast in Longview. With six busy courts already at Guthrie Park, the new location at McWhorter Park will give players another place to go.

“We’re really grateful to the Longview Economic Development Corporation, which set aside a portion of its budget for quality of life enhancements,” said Richard Yeakley, the city’s public information officer.

The fenced courts will provide a safer and more comfortable area for games, especially during evening hours when temperatures are lower.

Helping Ease Crowds at Guthrie Park

The city hopes the new McWhorter Park courts will help reduce the number of players crowding the current courts at Guthrie Park.

“It also provides another place in the community a little bit physically separated from Guthrie Park, where the courts currently are. We have six courts there that stay busy year ‘round, week ‘round, weekday ‘round. So having a secondary place in a different park will hopefully relieve a little bit of that congestion that you sometimes feel when you go out and try to play at Guthrie Park.” – (Richard Yeakley)

The city aims to hold a ribbon cutting sometime next year once the project is finished.

Growing Community Access

The grant shows Longview’s effort to improve life for its residents. By adding courts in another park, the city gives more people a chance to enjoy pickleball without long waits or crowded spaces. These upgrades are part of a larger goal to support healthy, active lifestyles in the community.
