Rally for the Badge Pickleball Event: On Friday, June 20, the San Diego Police Officers Association Foundation will hold its first annual pickleball tournament, Rally for the Badge, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Rancho Arbolitos Swim & Tennis Club in Poway. The pickleball event will raise money for the SDPOA Memorial Fund.
The tournament will start with a special exhibition match featuring San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl and Leslie Machitar, the mother of Officer Austin Machitar, who died in the line of duty on August 26, 2024. Their match will serve as a tribute to all officers who have lost their lives while serving.
A Day of Purpose and Play
The event offers more than just a game. It is a time for the community to come together and remember fallen officers. The tournament will also include lunch, drinks, raffles, and event swag for players and spectators.
The player ticket costs $100 and includes tournament play, lunch, two drink tickets, a raffle entry, and event merchandise. Spectator tickets are $25 and include lunch and two drink tickets.
The SDPOA Memorial Fund uses the money raised to help San Diego officers travel to honor their fallen teammates during National Police Week in Washington, D.C., and at other events across California.
Remembering Officer Austin Machitar
The highlight of the day will be the opening match played by Police Chief Scott Wahl and Leslie Machitar. This emotional moment is meant to remind everyone of the real reason behind the event: honoring those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
Helping Officers Honor the Fallen
The SDPOA Memorial Fund plays an important role in keeping the memory of fallen officers alive. The money raised from Rally for the Badge ensures that their fellow officers can attend services and memorials across the state and the country.
