Baldwin County Pickleball Courts: Persistent rain and construction setbacks have delayed the opening of Baldwin County’s new pickleball courts and water park at Walter B. Williams Park in Milledgeville, Georgia. The courts, expected this spring, may now open by the end of June, while the water park is delayed until summer 2026.
Construction Delays Hit Community Projects
The Walter B. Williams Park in Baldwin County was set to unveil two major recreation projects—a large pickleball court complex and a city water park. However, heavy rain and soil conditions have stalled progress, frustrating residents and officials.
County Manager Carlos Tobar said, “I’m more frustrated than anybody else that it wasn’t done. We started early enough in May of last year, but the rain has affected everything. We just can’t work the soil when it’s wet.”
Pickleball Courts Near Completion
The community has shown particular interest in the pickleball facility, which will include around 25 courts. These courts have created a buzz among local players who have waited months to use the new space.
Local resident Kimmy Clements said, “I truly didn’t feel like it would be ready by March or April. I figured it would probably be June or July. You can’t control the weather, and I think they’re doing the best they can.”
Charlie Page, who moved to Baldwin County in July, said, “Last we heard, it was mostly weather—and then maybe some material delays—but it’s going to be great having that many courts near the water park.”
Steve Franks, who launched Pickleball Free Play in the area three years ago, said, “Things just don’t happen quick outside. Sometimes you get delays. But we’re pretty happy with the way it’s going.”
Water Park Faces Longer Setback
While pickleball players may get on the courts soon, the city’s new water park will take much longer to open. Initially scheduled for Memorial Day 2025, the water park is now expected to be finished by September—but won’t open to the public until summer 2026.
Although many are focused on the pickleball complex, others are looking forward to what the water park will offer families in the future.
Steve Franks said, “They need to do something for the kids. It’s going to be great, but it’s been slow.”
Kimmy Clements added, “As long as it’s supervised well and taken care of the way it should be, I think it could be a great thing for Milledgeville.”
What This Means for the Community
The delay has been disappointing, but the community remains hopeful. With 25 courts, Baldwin County is set to become a key pickleball destination. Once the courts open later this month, local players will finally have access to modern facilities. The water park, while slower to arrive, promises future fun for local families.
