The City of Canandaigua’s Environmental and Ordinance Committees gave conditional approval Monday for the first-ever Dyls Pickleball Tournament. Scheduled for either July 20 or August 3 at Sonnenberg Park, the event aims to raise funds for the Dylan Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund, honoring a late Canandaigua Academy graduate. Organizers expect 150 to 200 attendees and 32 teams competing in a double-elimination format.

Julia Ippolito, who presented the event application, said the tournament will include two to three food trucks, raffle prizes, and children’s games. The goal is to celebrate Dylan Smith’s memory while supporting local youth through scholarships. The pickleball event is designed to be family-friendly and community-focused.
Concerns and Conditions from Committees
Residents and council members raised issues about traffic, noise, and the use of diesel generators by food trucks. There were also worries about setting a precedent for future large tournaments at Sonnenberg Park. To address these concerns, the committees added several conditions:
No on-street parking near the park; parking will be at Canandaigua Middle School.
Volunteers will manage traffic and signage.
No amplified music or diesel generators allowed.
The event must end by 6 p.m.
Committee Chair Erich Dittmar stressed the event’s local importance. “We definitely don’t want to invite outside tournaments,” he said, calling the fundraiser “a way to honor a community member.”
Other City Updates
Besides the pickleball event, the committees discussed plans for a virtual museum exhibit at Kershaw Park and upgrades to the city’s water treatment infrastructure. These projects aim to improve cultural engagement and city services for residents.
Community Impact
The approval of the Dyls Pickleball Tournament offers a unique chance for Canandaigua residents to support local youth and honor a beloved community member. By placing conditions on the event, the city ensures it remains respectful to neighbors while fostering community spirit. Organizers and officials hope the fundraiser will inspire future local events without disrupting the neighborhood.
