Bullhead City Greenlights Shade Upgrade After Pickleball Players Rally for Comfort at Rotary Park

The Bullhead City Council has approved a $50,000 budget amendment to add shade at the popular Rotary Park pickleball courts, following a request from local pickleball players. During a 23-minute hearing on the city’s $193 million tentative budget Tuesday night, the only last-minute change made was the addition of funding to provide shade over the bleacher area at the outdoor courts.

Community Voices Bring Change

Local pickleball enthusiasts had asked the city to install permanent shade between the courts to improve comfort for players and spectators. At first, the council had declined the request, believing they were being asked to fully cover the courts—an effort expected to be more costly.

Once it became clear that the desired shade project would cost under $50,000 and that the local pickleball association was willing to help fund it, the council reversed its decision. The shade structure was added to the budget amendment advanced Tuesday night.

Popularity of Pickleball at Rotary Park

Rotary Park is home to outdoor pickleball courts that see frequent use by players of all ages. The sport’s popularity continues to surge both locally and nationwide, making player comfort and spectator experience a growing priority.

Adding shade to the bleacher area will help spectators and players enjoy matches more comfortably, especially during the area’s hot summer months.

Pickleball Nation Makes an Impact

The council’s decision to include shade in the budget shows the impact of community engagement and reflects the city’s support of its growing pickleball community. As the sport continues to expand in Bullhead City, more upgrades and amenities may follow.
