Downtown Tuscaloosa Welcomes State-of-the-Art Pickleball Courts—Here’s What Makes Them Stand Out

Tuscaloosa Pickleball Courts Opening: City leaders and YMCA officials gathered Thursday to celebrate the opening of two new pickleball courts as the sport grows in popularity. The courts are located just outside the YMCA of Tuscaloosa at 209 13th Street, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the downtown area.

The new ADA-accessible courts feature enhanced lighting and security cameras so players and visitors of all ages can feel safe while enjoying the facilities.

Community Partnership Makes it Possible

“The YMCA of Tuscaloosa is an organization that consistently meets a standard of excellence that puts our constituents first,” said Mayor Walt Maddox.

“The YMCA doesn’t deliver promises like so many; they deliver services that matter — and the City is proud to be a partner in that mission.” – (Walt Maddox)

City Councilman Lee Busby, who represents District 4, praised the YMCA’s leadership, especially CEO Jeff Knox, for helping bring the project to life with funding from the city.

“The team Jeff Knox has put on board has been phenomenal and none of this would be here without that team.” – (Lee Busby)

A Celebration of Fitness and Community

YMCA CEO Jeff Knox was also present for the ribbon cutting and shared his excitement about the new courts.

“It’s always special when an idea becomes reality — especially one that promotes fellowship and healthy lifestyles. We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with the City as it allows us to impact more and more of the Tuscaloosa community.” – (Jeff Knox)

A Growing Sport with Growing Support

Pickleball’s popularity is soaring in Tuscaloosa and across the country. The new courts offer a safe and welcoming space for players of all skill levels and ages to gather and play.

With strong partnerships between the City of Tuscaloosa and organizations like the YMCA, more pickleball opportunities are expected in the future.
