Sioux Center Opens New Pickleball Courts to Energize Community Fitness This Summer

Sioux Center Opens New Pickleball Courts: Four new outdoor pickleball courts will be built in Sioux Center, Iowa, this summer to help meet community interest in the fast-growing sport. The Sioux Center City Council approved two courts at Children’s Park, located at 840 4th Avenue SE, and two more at Open Space Park, located at 880 7th Street NE. Construction is expected to start in late June or July.

Encouraging Fitness for all Generations

Sioux Center Parks Director Lee Van Meeteren said the new courts will encourage people of all ages to stay active.

He also mentioned that fundraising will help cover the cost of adding the four courts.

Locations and Project Details

At Children’s Park, the courts may be built on the east side of the park, replacing older playground equipment. The exact spot will be finalized after the Parks Board meets to review the location.

At Open Space Park, the courts are part of a larger Joint Use planning project involving the City of Sioux Center, Dordt University, and Sioux Center Community Schools. The partners will share the project’s cost.

The new pickleball courts will be placed south of the two new softball diamonds, near the intersection of 7th Street NE and 13th Avenue NE. The final placement will be determined as part of a long-term plan for the area, which may also include tennis courts, mini-pitch soccer/basketball courts, and walking trails.

Building Momentum for the Future

Councilmember Jenn Vermeer highlighted how the project reflects the power of collaboration.

“It’s more than just pickleball courts — it reflects a shared vision to invest in quality-of-life amenities for all ages and build momentum for future enhancements that make our community an even better place to live, work, and play.” – (Jenn Vermeer)

Strong Community Support

The project shows how community interest and strong partnerships can bring new opportunities to Sioux Center. Residents can look forward to having new spaces to gather, exercise, and enjoy one of the nation’s fastest-growing sports.
