Bowie Approves New Covered Pickleball Courts at Pelham Park

Bowie Approves New Covered Pickleball Courts: The Bowie City Council has approved plans to build new covered pickleball courts at Pelham Park. With council approval secured last week, the project will now proceed to a public hearing and the formal bid process. The new facility aims to meet growing community interest in the sport.

Project Details and Location

The project will include four covered pickleball courts, along with new parking and improvements to a section of the existing walking trail. All new additions will be handicap accessible.

The courts will be located west of the Bowie Knife monument and south of the soccer fields in Pelham Park.

Funding and Cost Estimates

The 4B Economic Development Corporation is overseeing the project. Ward Wallace, chairman of the 4B board, presented the proposal to the city council.

The board requested approval to spend up to $1.2 million in 4B sales tax funds. However, Wallace said they expect the actual cost to be closer to $880,000.

Community Impact

The new courts are part of broader efforts to enhance recreation options in Bowie and respond to the rising popularity of pickleball. A public hearing will take place before final bids are accepted, giving residents a chance to weigh in on the project.
