Argyle Sports Academy Pickleball Courts: A major new indoor sports facility focused on pickleball and badminton is a step closer to becoming a reality in Argyle. The 33,600-square-foot Argyle Sports Academy, planned within the Argyle Landing development, will include up to 20 courts and aims to attract players and tournaments from across the country.
Indoor Pickleball Surge Reaches Argyle
On June 4, the Argyle Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a special use permit for the Argyle Sports Academy project. The facility will be located along FM 407 and accessed by Avalon Boulevard, Hampshire Drive, and Gateway Boulevard.
The project will be built in two phases. Phase 1 includes 24,000 square feet of indoor pickleball and badminton courts. Phase 2 will add another 9,600 square feet and four more courts, creating a total of 20 courts for both sports. A pro shop will also be included.
Expected Community and Economic Benefits
Karri Reddy, Principal CEO of Frisco Badminton Academy, which serves as a model for the Argyle Sports Academy, explained the potential impact. The Frisco facility trained two U.S. Olympians who went on to win a badminton medal in Paris.
Reddy said the new Argyle academy could similarly host national tournaments, bringing athletes from across America. Membership fees and pro shop sales will also generate sales tax revenue for the town.
Landscaping and Traffic Considerations
The project’s design includes a 25-foot landscaping buffer along Gateway Boulevard, with one tree planted every 30 feet. Due to a 15-foot sanitation sewer easement, some of the required landscaping cannot be planted on-site. To compensate, the developer may contribute to the Argyle tree reforestation fund.
Argyle Landing offers 4.84 acres of open space next to the proposed sports facility. Town staff requested an updated traffic study to assess the impact of the academy. The study showed the facility would generate 258 peak-hour vehicle trips—two fewer than projected in a 2021 study for the Argyle Landing development.
Next Steps for the Project
The Argyle Town Council will consider final approval for the Academy on June 16. According to the developer, infrastructure for the surrounding Argyle Landing community is expected to be completed by March 2026.
With the rising popularity of the sport in the U.S., the Academy is poised to become a key destination for both local players and national tournaments.
