Seltzer Park Pickleball Courts: On Monday evening, the Shelby Park Board met to talk about problems happening at the pickleball courts in Seltzer Park. Complaints included players not sharing, trash being left behind, and people using bad language, especially during the evening hours.
The issues came up during the board’s regular meeting, where several members said they had heard from people upset about the way the courts are being used. These courts, located off Parkwood Drive in Shelby, Ohio, were opened about two years ago.
Concerns Over Player Behavior and Property Damage
Dave Downs, an at-large board member, said most complaints came from the evening sessions. “The trash is a big deal,” said Parks Superintendent Jerry Marshall, even though trash cans are already nearby.
Cathie Albert, 1st Ward board member, said she plays mostly in the early morning and hasn’t had any problems.
One serious issue involved property damage. Jerry Marshall shared that the Shelby Police Department had been called after a pickleball paddle was thrown from the court and broke a window in a nearby greenhouse. Equipment at the courts has also been damaged, including a broken net and a paddle holder.
Steps Toward Better Management
To help with the trash problem, Dave Downs said his sister-in-law put up temporary signs. Cathie Albert also mentioned placing signs to remind players to clean up after themselves.
The board talked about creating signs with official rules for both the game and court use. Dave Downs has been researching rules from other places to help with this.
There are no security cameras at the courts right now. Ralph Rosinsky, 4th Ward board member, asked if it would be possible to install one. The board agreed to look into this idea, though no decision was made.
