Oahu Pickleball Association Empowers Hawaii Seniors to Get Active at Free Expo

The Oahu Pickleball Association will highlight the benefits of pickleball for seniors at the Hawaii Active Seniors Expo on Friday and Saturday, June 13–14. The free pickleball event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hawai‘i Convention Center and is open to all ages.

This two-day expo focuses on healthy living for Hawaii’s older adults. The Oahu Pickleball Association aims to show how pickleball helps seniors stay active, healthy, and social. Visitors will be able to try the sport through beginner-friendly courts and free clinics.

Helping Kupuna Stay Active

Oahu Pickleball Association Vice President Kevin Ching and board member Danny Tengan are leading efforts to introduce more seniors to the game. They say the sport has had a big impact on the lives of Hawaii’s kupuna.

“Pickleball is for all ages. We have kupuna over 90 years old who had never participated in any sport before—and now they’re playing five to six times a week. It’s great for balance, cardio, mental sharpness, and overall psychological well-being.” – (Danny Tengan)

“Even people who’ve never played a sport in their lives can pick up pickleball quickly. It’s fun, accessible, and life-changing.” – (Kevin Ching)

Activities at the Expo

The event will feature a “Learn Pickleball” court where seniors can try the sport for the first time. Free one-hour clinics will be available for beginners. There will also be low-cost sessions for advanced beginners.

The Oahu Pickleball Association works with Parks & Recreation to offer free classes across the island. Interested players can check their website for times and locations.

Community and Family Connection

More than just exercise, pickleball helps bring people together. Many families in Hawaii play the sport across generations. Grandparents, parents, and grandchildren all enjoy the game. This makes it a powerful tool for staying connected.

The Oahu Pickleball Association believes that building these connections is just as important as fitness. They say being active helps seniors feel better both physically and mentally.

Looking Ahead

The group’s work at the Hawaii Active Seniors Expo is part of a larger mission to promote wellness through sport. With events like this, they hope to reach more kupuna and help them live longer, happier lives. Admission to the Hawaii Active Seniors Expo is free and open to everyone.
