Roanoke Shine Pickleball Team Joins Legends League: 50+ Pickleball Pros Set Sights on National Glory

Roanoke Shine Pickleball Team: Roanoke has a new elite pickleball team for players aged 50 and older. The Roanoke Shine will compete in the U.S. Legends Pickleball League during the 2025–2026 season. The team is one of 12 in the country playing at the national level for top honors and prize money.

A New League for Experienced Players

The U.S. Legends Pickleball League is a new competition made for top-level players aged 50 and above. The Roanoke Shine is set to take part with 14 team members—seven men and seven women. All players are age 50+ and compete at a 4.5 or 5.0 skill level.

“It’s an exciting time for pickleball in the Roanoke Valley,” said Carter Turner, co-owner of the Roanoke Shine. “There is unbelievable talent in the 50+ age group, and as part of USLPL, we’re connecting Roanoke to a rapidly growing network of pickleball excellence around the country.”

The team will take part in four major matchups between fall 2025 and January 2026. Players will battle for the league title and large cash prizes.

Supporting Local Talent and Growth

The new team also brings more visibility to the area’s growing pickleball community.

“Roanoke has always been a city that punches above its weight,” said Trish Hammer, co-owner of the Roanoke Shine. “With this league, not only are we creating an opportunity for some of our players to go head-to-head with the nation’s top players, but we’re also strengthening the talent within our community.”

Roanoke is becoming known for its love of the sport. The Moyer Sports Complex in nearby Salem was recently upgraded in a $27.9 million project. It now includes 13 lighted outdoor pickleball courts.

Also, Performance Pickleball, the city’s first dedicated indoor pickleball center, opened in December 2024. It features 10 top-quality indoor courts and hosts daily games and events.

A Win for the Whole Community

City leaders say this new team is part of something bigger for Roanoke.

“Roanoke continues to attract innovation and opportunity, and that includes sports,” said Roanoke City Mayor Joe Cobb. “Being one of the founding teams in the Legends League isn’t just a win for athletes; it’s a win for our growing reputation as a hub for active living and community engagement.”

As Roanoke prepares for its first USLPL season, the Roanoke Shine will help bring more attention to senior sports and inspire more people to stay active through pickleball.
