Broadview Heights Pickleball Courts: Broadview Heights is set to build six new pickleball courts at the City Hall/Leo H. Bender Community Center campus on Broadview Road. The courts will be part of a larger $978,583 project awarded to Ronyak Paving, a company based in Burton, Ohio.
The new pickleball courts will be located on green space between the community center and the Broadview Heights Police Station. Construction is expected to begin in mid-summer once the contract is officially signed.
Need for Dedicated Pickleball Courts
Amanda Hutcheson, the city’s director of parks and recreation, said the growing popularity of pickleball was a key reason for the new courts.
“The city is building the pickleball courts due to increased interest in the sport and to give pickleball players their own dedicated space.” -(Amanda Hutcheson)
The city has faced limitations with its existing sports facilities. The current courts at The Fields, a city sports complex on Broadview Road north of Ohio 82, are in poor condition and not safe for continued use.
Planning and Design
The city previously hired Hejduk-Cox & Associates Inc., an engineering firm based in Solon, to design the courts. The firm was paid $33,982 for the design of both the basketball and pickleball courts.
City Engineer Ethan Neff said the start date will be finalized once all steps in the contract process are complete.
“I would assume most likely (construction will start) in the mid-summer, but I can’t get a firm date until it’s awarded and the contract signed.” -(Ethan Neff)
City Council President Robert Boldt noted the project cost was higher than hoped.
“I was hoping it (the winning bid) would come in cheaper … it’s pretty pricey.”-(Robert Boldt)
Importance for the Community
The addition of dedicated pickleball courts reflects the city’s response to changing recreation trends. With the sport becoming more popular among all age groups, the new space is expected to provide a safe and fun area for residents to play.
