Ripley Unveils Free Pickleball Courts in Heartfelt Tribute to Beloved Local Legend

Ripley Unveils Free Pickleball Courts: Four new pickleball courts were officially opened on June 16 in Ripley, West Virginia, named in memory of local pickleball enthusiast John K. McGinley. The John K. McGinley Pickleball Courts, located near Ripley Elementary School and the city pool, are now open daily and free for public use.

The opening event was filled with heartfelt memories and gratitude from the community. John McGinley, who passed away recently, was one of the sport’s most dedicated players in Jackson County. He played often, even in the rain, and brought laughter and friendship to every match.

A Community Vision Comes to Life

Ripley Mayor Carolyn Rader said John McGinley was the inspiration behind the project.

“We couldn’t have done this without John’s inspiration and encouragement. I was resistant because it was taking over tennis, which I love. But he and Phil Iman convinced me. And here we are today.”-(Carolyn Rader)

Phil Iman, who worked closely with city leaders to bring the courts to life, added,

“Otis Cutshaw and his son, Mason, did a phenomenal job. His company, Sportsmaster Courts, provided exceptional work. And Don Smith was always helping with anything we needed.”-(Phil Iman)

He thanked the Jackson County Board of Education, Ripley City Council, and Mayor Carolyn Rader for their support.

“When you’re in her office and she picks up the phone to call the superintendent of schools, it’s something else. She isn’t afraid to ask, and now we have pickleball courts. It was amazing that the city council was willing to find the funding for this. It didn’t require any fundraising and is a rare thing. Thank you also to the board that donated the land and provided the fencing.”-(Phil Iman)

Honoring a Beloved Friend

Phil Iman shared how much John McGinley meant to the pickleball community.

“This is a beautiful day, but many times, I would play with John McGinley in the rain. Even when he was not feeling well, he’d come out to play as much as he could. If he got a ball past you, he’d flash that sly smile. And when he couldn’t play much anymore, he’d be out there watching. He just enjoyed the fellowship.”-(Phil Iman)

John McGinley’s joyful attitude on the court was remembered fondly by many, including one of his favorite players, Tonya Criser.

“He’d always make fun of my style,” said Tonya Criser. “I miss him.”

A Lasting Tribute to the Sport

Pickleball continues to grow in Jackson County, and this new court complex shows just how much support the sport has gained. It’s not just a game but a way for people to come together, stay active, and remember those who made a difference.

The John K. McGinley Pickleball Courts stand as a tribute to a man who played with heart, humor, and a deep love for the game.
