St. James Pickleball Showdown Unites Community, Kicks Off Military Appreciation Week

St. James Pickleball Showdown: A pickleball tournament held on June 8, 2025, at the courts off St. James Drive launched this year’s Military Appreciation event in St. James, North Carolina. The event was hosted by St. James American Legion Post 543 in partnership with the St. James Pickleball Association, bringing over 50 players together to support veterans and youth.

The tournament was part of a newly expanded week of activities organized by Post 543. The event, previously a single-day celebration, now features what the community calls the “Mt. Rushmore” of St. James sports—pickleball, bowling, tennis, and golf. The goal is to increase local involvement and raise funds for programs that directly benefit Brunswick County residents.

Community Rallies for Local Impact

The partnership between St. James American Legion Post 543 and the St. James Pickleball Association marked the first time the two groups teamed up. All proceeds from the tournament go toward more than 70 American Legion programs supporting veterans and youth in the county.

“Every dollar we raise stays right here,” said St. James American Legion Post 543 Commander Phillip McGhee. “It does not leave the county. It goes to the kids and the veterans. We don’t get any money from national or division or district, so whatever money we have for our programs we have to raise on our own.”

Players and community members joined the tournament to show support and enjoy a day of active fun. The event also helped raise awareness of local efforts to support those who have served and future generations.

Strengthening Community Through Sport

The pickleball event not only raised money but also strengthened community bonds. Participants of all ages joined the tournament, which served as a symbol of appreciation for military service.

By kicking off Military Appreciation Week with a sporting event, organizers hope to attract more community engagement and support in future years. The growing popularity of pickleball made it a perfect fit to start the week with energy and purpose.
