Utah is now leading the country in high school pickleball thanks to the work of the Utah High School Pickleball Association. The group was started less than a year ago and already includes more than 30 school clubs. The goal is to make pickleball an official school sport in Utah.
Building a Statewide Program
Jason Peery, a former pro player and now a coach, started the Utah High School Pickleball Association (UHSPA) to bring pickleball into schools across the state. He created a plan that helps schools set up student-run clubs with teacher support. These clubs train, compete, and take part in a full season.
Jason Peery, his wife Lisa Peery, and UHSPA Director Helen Monson form the board of this non-profit group. Together, they hope to grow pickleball as a major sport for teens in Utah.
“Our goal is that with the UHSPA framework in place, school teams will have a legitimate place in high school sports, and that pickleball will become a sanctioned sport in Utah.” -(Jason Peery)
First Season Draws Over 300 Players
In its first season, 24 of the 30-plus clubs took part in six weeks of matches. These included team competitions and individual championships in singles, gender doubles, and mixed doubles. More than 300 students competed, from beginners to advanced players. Some schools traveled up to three hours to take part.
Helen Monson believes this is just the beginning.
“We are so excited to see Jason’s initiative grow. Kids, parents, and coaches are all excited to participate and are so positive and kind to each other on the court. We have been supported by so many indoor facilities and sponsors, and it’s just a joy to watch how enthusiastic everyone is.”-(Helen Monson)
Pro Support and Future Plans
Professional players like Tyler Loong and Etta Tuinetoa supported the students by giving money to help winning schools grow their programs.
UHSPA has plans to expand into Southern Utah, with schools in places like St. George and Cedar City. The group also wants to help people become certified referees so matches can be run the right way.

Growing the Sport for the Future
Utah’s early success with high school pickleball could set an example for other states. With more students joining and more support from pros and sponsors, UHSPA is building a strong future for youth pickleball in Utah. Their goal is to make it an official sport and give kids more chances to play, compete, and grow.
