Pancreatic Cancer Pickleball Fundraiser Event: The Sky Foundation is hosting a pickleball tournament on Sunday, 22nd June, to raise money for pancreatic cancer research. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Lifetime Fitness in Rochester Hills, Michigan. It aims to support early detection efforts for this deadly disease.
Pickleball for a Cause
The tournament includes a two-hour match from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a lunch sponsored by J. Fishman and a mimosa bar. The event is part of a larger campaign called the “Sky Movement,” which encourages people to get active and support cancer awareness throughout the month.
“It’s from nine to noon. At 9:00, our guests will arrive, 9:30 to 11:30, we have the tournament going on. After that, we have lunch sponsored by J. Fishman and a mimosa bar to send you off nice and bubbly,” said the Sky Foundation’s Executive Director.
He added, “It’s an initiative to get people out and get people moving in a way that works good for them. So we’ve had yoga events, we’ve had movie screenings and of course pickleball events.”
Focus on Early Detection
Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. Many cases are diagnosed too late for successful treatment. That’s why raising awareness about early signs is important.
“Early detection is key here,” said the Executive Director. “Some symptoms include back pain, new onset of diabetes, jaundice, you know, things that you really need to pay attention to especially if you have a first year relative.”
He stressed the importance of understanding family history. “Somebody that is mother, father, sister, brother that’s somebody in your family is very important to know that you have potentially a genetic factor as well.”
A Community Connection
The idea for the event came from the executive director’s own experience playing pickleball with his father. He found that many players were in the 65 to 80 age group—the same group at higher risk for pancreatic cancer.
“Those are the people who often get diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. So I feel like it’s an important group of people that we get the word out to.”
How to Join the Event
The event welcomes all skill levels, from beginners to experienced players. Tickets cost $35. People interested in joining can visit the foundation’s website at skyfoundationinc.org.
“We have people of all skill levels that we invite out—beginners. If you are new to the game this is a great way to get involved and just kind of learn.”
The executive director encouraged everyone to take part in raising awareness while enjoying a fun and healthy activity.
