The TopCity Pickleball Tournament took place at Hughes Park in Topeka on June 21 and 22, 2025. The two-day event brought together over 50 teams and was held to support the Topeka South Rotary’s efforts to fight period poverty in the local school district.
Doubles Events Highlight Saturday Play
Saturday featured men’s and women’s doubles matches, while Sunday was reserved for mixed doubles. The entry fee was $60 per team for each event. Games began early in the morning, with a large turnout and good energy from both players and spectators.
Organizers were pleased with the return of the tournament after its successful debut in 2024. With so many teams showing up on Saturday, the courts at Hughes Park were busy all day.
Strong Local Support and Facilities
Tournament Director Kyle Lear explained why pickleball continues to grow in Topeka.
“One thing about Topeka is that it’s got facilities where most of these places don’t,”. “We’ve got 18 pickleball courts [at Hughes Park], a new facility that I believe has 12 or 16 courts over there, we have people who go over to Sport Zone or Genesis, and now Ichabod Grill has courts.”(Kyle Lear)
The large number of courts and the enthusiasm of local players have helped make the sport popular in the area.
Tournament for a Cause
All the money raised from the TopCity Pickleball Tournament goes to the Topeka South Rotary. This local group focuses on helping those in need and runs programs to support students in Topeka Public Schools USD 501, especially in the area of period poverty.
By combining fun and competition with community service, the event has become a meaningful way to bring people together while supporting a good cause.
