South Hills Park Pickleball Courts: On June 19, 2025, South Lebanon Township held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open six new pickleball courts at South Hills Park. The courts were built with the help of a $227,000 Local Share Account grant given in 2024. The courts provide local residents a new and much-needed outdoor space to play the fast-growing sport.
A Long-Awaited Project Comes to Life
South Lebanon Township Manager Jamie Yiengst said the new pickleball courts replaced part of the park’s old tennis area, which had been around for more than 50 years. “South Lebanon Township is very proud of this entire park,” said Jamie Yiengst. She thanked the township’s road crew and public works director for their work in preparing the site and planting grass around the area.
Supervisor Steve Krause explained that the idea to build pickleball courts had been discussed even before Jamie Yiengst’s time as township manager. He thanked her for helping secure the funds needed to complete the project.
Pickleball Community Celebrates
The moment the ribbon was cut, players rushed to the new courts. “We’re just very thankful, the whole pickleball community is very thankful for this,” said Cookie Haag. She shared that before the new courts opened, their group used the YMCA’s indoor courts, which were limited to just three.
For anyone looking to join the local pickleball group, Cookie Haag mentioned that they use the Team Reach app under the group name “South Hills 25.” There, members post game schedules and updates.
As the sport of pickleball continues to grow nationwide, towns like South Lebanon are stepping up to provide spaces for residents to stay active, connect with others, and enjoy the game.
