Luther Burbank Park Pickleball Courts: Eight newly resurfaced pickleball courts at Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island opened for public use on June 9. Thanks to dry weather, contractors finished the project early. Since opening, the courts have been very busy, and city staff are now working to manage high usage and minor conflicts.
Court Access and Temporary Closure
The courts reopened ahead of schedule after successful resurfacing and striping work. From June 30 to July 3, two of the western most courts near the Summer in the Wetland mural will be closed for mural restoration.
The rest of the courts will remain open for play during this time.
Crowds and Challenges
Due to the courts’ popularity, the Mercer Island Recreation Division is monitoring them closely. The city is developing new policies to address issues like overcrowding and disputes between players.
“With high court use, comes some issues. The recreation division is monitoring the courts and working on policies to address issues as they arise,” (according to the city).
City Council Discussion
At the Mercer Island City Council meeting on June 17, City Manager Jessi Bon reported that city staff are working on a better way for players to sign up for court time.
She noted that some players have argued at the courts and held unofficial tournaments.
“The city was anticipating some of this happening when the courts reopened.”(Jessi Bon)
Future Plans and Importance
City officials are focused on keeping the new courts safe and fun for everyone. As interest in pickleball grows, better systems for scheduling and use will help reduce tension and keep the game enjoyable for all.
