Harold Docherty Memorial Park Pickleball Courts: Hillsborough Township opened new pickleball courts at Harold Docherty Memorial Park on June 12, 2025, replacing an old street hockey rink with a modern complex. Located on Route 206, the new facility was built in response to strong local demand for more places to play one of the fastest-growing sports in the country.
New Courts Open with Community Support
Mayor John Ciccarelli led the ribbon-cutting, highlighting the sport’s rapid rise and community interest. “Pickleball has been gaining in popularity, not only in Hillsborough but throughout the country,” said John Ciccarelli. “Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the US.”
Town residents had reached out to local leaders requesting new pickleball courts. John Ciccarelli added, “Hillsborough residents have been asking for more pickleball, and nothing makes us happier than giving residents what they want.”
Designed for All Skill Levels
The new courts include important features like a posted list of rules, a court etiquette guide, and a paddle rack that helps players take turns fairly. The courts are open to all, whether beginners or experienced players.
Griffin Dunne, Director of Parks and Recreation, said, “With the high demand and rising popularity in the sport of pickleball, we’re proud to provide these dedicated pickleball courts right here in Hillsborough. From seasoned vets to first-timers, this complex is meant for all players regardless of skill level.”
Positive Response from Officials
Members of the Township Committee showed strong support for the project. Robert Britting Jr., Committeeman and Recreation Department Liaison, said, “I can’t think of a better addition to our parks than pickleball. I think it’s a safe bet that pickleball is here to stay.”
The new facility aims to bring the community together while encouraging healthy, active living.
