Senior Enrichment Center Pickleball Court: A group of senior citizens in Newton County, Georgia, have raised $40,000 to build a new outdoor pickleball court at the upcoming Senior Enrichment Center, which is expected to open in October 2025. The court will offer seniors more playing time and a space just for them to enjoy.
During a Newton County Board of Commissioners meeting on June 17, Freda Reed, Director of Senior Services, received unanimous approval to accept the funds and begin construction. Most of the money—$32,473—will go toward the court. The rest will help buy new furniture for the center.
A Court Built by Seniors, for Seniors
When plans for a new Senior Enrichment Center were announced, local seniors made their wishes clear: they wanted a pickleball court. Instead of asking about food services or lounge areas, their focus was on playing the game they love.
“I’m a senior as well,” said Freda Reed. “I just believe that if it’s something that they need and it’s something that they want, we try to make it possible for them.”
Commissioner J.C. Henderson, who represents District 4, showed support for the idea and the seniors involved. “I am to a [sic] senior myself, and I’ve been planning on trying to learn how to get pickleball going in my life,” he said. “I want to thank you and the seniors for always looking out for us.”
Current Limitations and New Opportunities
Currently, about 60 seniors play pickleball using temporary courts at the Newton County Recreation Department. The setup includes portable nets placed on a basketball court. This limits access to mornings only, since the court is used for basketball later in the day.
The new outdoor court will be open all day during the Senior Enrichment Center’s hours. It will give seniors a place that feels permanent and tailored to their needs. The center will be on the west side of Newton County, off Highway 212, helping seniors from different areas stay connected.
“We’re trying to do something where our seniors know that they have a place where they can come and it’s dedicated to them,” Reed said.
Strengthening Bodies and Friendships
Besides staying active, many seniors have built friendships through pickleball. These bonds lead them to take part in other events at the center. Reed says this shows how pickleball benefits both health and happiness.
“The courts and activities not only helps them to stay active, it also gives them socialization,” Reed said.
