Inclusive Pickleball Program for Neurodivergent Kids: A special pickleball program called “Pickleball for a Purpose” is helping neurodivergent children feel included. The program was started by Andrea Lee, Sports Program Manager at Rhythm & Rally. She created it so kids with disabilities could play pickleball and enjoy time with others in the community.
A Sport for Everyone
Andrea Lee said the goal is to make sure all children have a chance to play. “Our goal is to allow individuals to have the opportunity to participate in pickleball. It’s a fun evolving sport for anyone, everyone,” said Andrea Lee.
She believes pickleball is perfect for all ages and abilities. “Rather individuals with mental, physical, or any disability, pickleball is a sport all people can play,” she said. “From a 40-years-old to a 110-years-old, anyone can literally play this sport.”
Building Community and Connection
Andrea Lee shared that Rhythm & Rally offers many programs like this. “We have various programs we like to offer here that the community understands and sees, that it is a sport that anyone can play and that is why it’s very valuable to our local community,” said Andrea Lee.
Parents also see the benefits. Laura Sugg, whose child has a disability, said the program helps kids connect. “I like it because it gives us them opportunity to connect outside of school,” said Laura Sugg. “So, they see their friends in school and get to come out and be a part of the community, and it’s inclusive with activities with folks with disabilities,” said Laura Sugg.
She added that it helps children feel accepted. “He wants to be involved, he wants to be connected, and it’s an opportunity for him to be active and connected with his friends. And it’s intentional inclusion,” said Laura Sugg.
More Than Just a Game
Andrea Lee explained that learning pickleball also teaches teamwork. By playing together, kids learn how to work with others and build friendships that can last beyond the court.
This program shows how sports can bring people together and help children with disabilities feel valued and included. Rhythm & Rally plans to keep offering activities that welcome everyone.
