Dunn Stadium Pickleball Courts Near Completion After Surprising Delays and Funding Boost

Dunn Stadium Pickleball Courts: County officials have approved more funding for the pickleball courts at Dunn Stadium, bringing the project closer to completion. The 12 new courts near Garden City are planned to open in early July and will be free for everyone.

New Costs and Progress Updates

The Bartholomew County Commissioners voted Monday to approve the second change order. This added $12,240 to the project, raising the total cost to $608,660.49. The money is from the federal American Rescue Plan.

Commissioner Tony London visited the site and saw fresh paint on the courts. The courts are being built on the west side of Dunn Stadium. They will be open on a first-come, first-served basis.

Delays from Permitting Confusion

Rich Day, the County Parks Director, said the project faced many delays. At first, the courts were supposed to be finished by October. But because the land is owned by the county but inside the city, no one was sure who approved stormwater plans.

Charlie Day from DLZ explained that once it was clear the city was in charge, a new stormwater design had to be made. This caused more delays. Rain also damaged the site, so new erosion control permits were needed.

Previous Changes and Canceled Plans

Earlier this year, the commissioners approved another change order for $23,202.31. Rich Day said that cost was for extra work to get the needed permits.

Bad weather also slowed down construction. A tournament planned for August had to be canceled because the courts were not ready. Even with the problems, the courts are almost done. They will soon be open for the public to enjoy.

News in Brief: Dunn Stadium Pickleball Courts

Bartholomew County raised the cost of the new pickleball courts at Dunn Stadium by over $12,000 due to delays and permit issues. The courts are planned to open in July, will be free to use, and aim to bring more recreation to the community.
